If you thought Rihanna’s crystal dress stole the show at the CFDA Fashion Awards Monday night, then you’re probably overlooking an important detail. For the first time in the CFDA history, an artist was given free reign to design the art concept for the awards show. Aerosyn-Lex Mestrovic was selected as the artist for the 2014 awards after his “Living Paintings” caught the attention of CFDA members during Armory Week. A skilled calligrapher, the paintings are made by capturing every brushstroke on camera. These swirls and flurries of color are then reassembled and displayed on film, making the paintings ‘live’ through motion. Aerosyn-Lex projected a new set of “living” works on stage at the ceremony, which were accompanied by his calligraphic designs in the CFDA invitations and awards journal.
