Billboard art by KidSuper & light art installation by NITEMIND.
Artist KidSuper took over Wallplay’s Orchard & Delancey billboards for the New York Primary face-off. The 24-year-old Brooklyn artist KidSuper cleverly depicts Bernie Sanders (Yodie Sanders), Hillary Clinton (Princess Lillary) and Donald Trump (Darth Trump) as Star Wars characters in CANDIDATE WARS. On Wallplay’s Delancey-facing billboard, a quote by the Jedi Master Yoda warns passersby: “Fear is the path to the dark side”.
“I created CANDIDATE WARS to help educate my friends who didn’t know enough about what was going on with the presidential race. I wanted to create a series that was fun and accessible to get first and second time voters interested to participate in the political process,” says artist KidSuper of the inspiration for his art piece.
When the artist approached Wallplay’s founder, curator Laura O’Reilly, with the idea for CANDIDATE WARS in preparation for the April 19th New York Primary, the programming instantly came together. The day the billboards were installed, an installation by Brooklyn creative collective NITEMIND launched inside of Wallplay’s ground level concept space. NITEMIND is known for using LED and neon lighting as an integral part of their work. Suggestive of Star Wars light sabers, the installation has been receiving a massive amount of foot traffic.
“It’s been creative nirvana to have the Kidsuper CANDIDATE WARS billboard launch serendipitously at the same time as NITEMIND’s light saber-esque art installation. We have come together to support Bernie and encourage people to vote,” says O’Reilly. She also added, “As creative professionals we believe it is our duty to transmit messages that raise awareness and consciousness through art. That is the backbone of what wallplay stands for and why we do what we do.”
Wallplay began its art billboard program “Art Massively Done” in 2013 as a visual escape to advertising that abounds in New York City. Wallplay art billboards have included “I Can’t Grow Up” by Baron Von Fancy, FKA Twigs album cover, Mint & Serf, Wu-Tang’s 20th anniversary by Lina Viktor, Cash4, LuYang, Anthony Lister and many others.
Both installations opened on Friday April 15th and will remain on view until April 22nd, NITEMIND public hours are 6pm-10pm Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.
KidSuper is an idea that came from the desire to dream and rediscover the wonderment of being a kid. KidSuper came from those childhood memories of when you ran around in your underwear with a homemade cape, convinced that you had superpowers and nothing and no one could tell you otherwise. KidSuper works to recapture this magic, and to re-explore the KID in all of us that is screaming for adventure, creativity, and sheer enjoyment. www.kidsuper.com
