18 months ago, the world got its first taste of FKA twigs. Following the first two releases, EP1 and EP2, her debut album, LP1, features 10 brand new songs. It is a bold, intimate sonic selfportrait of the admittedly shy artist, who hails from the rural town of Gloucestershire, outside of London. Her work speaks for itself: throughout LP1, twigs shines confidently as a producer, composer, singer, and lyricist of her own invention. Each track is born out of FKA twigs’ artistic philosophy of spontaneous creation and collaboration in the studio.
“It’s a hundred percent my personality, a hundred percent my vision,” she says. “It’s the only thing I ever wanted as an artist.”
Part of twigs’ artistry is found in her collaborations with mutuallyvisionary artists that support her powerfully haunting voice and singular vision. The LP1 exhibition at Wallplay features artwork created for the album by Jesse Kanda, who has manipulated his own photographs of twigs to a stunning and surreal effect. The LP1 album cover art, developed by Kanda, is featured on Wallplay’s Delancey public art billboard during the entire course of the exhibition. Kanda previously directed the acclaimed videos for FKA twigs’ hit tracks, ‘Water Me’ and ‘How’s That’ which will also be featured on Wallplay’s public digital art screens playing 24/7 on Delancey and Orchard Street.
The cover art itself is reminiscent of portraiture by the late Francis Bacon. In the image, a doe eyed twigs looks outward, dreamily. Wreathed by a skyblue background, and her skin glossed in a pugilist’s red, she looks disconnected yet vulnerable, far away yet deeply present. Kanda’s photo manipulations and video direction of twigs perfectly illustrates the surreal and fluid quality of her music. This iconic collaboration is showcased on Wallplay’s transmedia exhibition platform through photographic prints, digital video, looping audio from the album, and takeover of the Delancey street art billboard.
